Monthly community phlebotomy pilot update

December 2021

Welcome to the December monthly community phlebotomy pilot update. Previous updates can be found on our website along with a full list of phlebotomy services across BHR.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly to make this pilot a success as well as wishing all of our colleagues and partners a peaceful and happy festive period.

You can find a list of NELFT phlebotomy service opening times over the festive period on our website.

Sites and capacity

As of 6 December 21, 2 chairs are now operating from Loxford Polyclinic, 7 days per week from Mon to Sun, 8am to 4 pm excluding Bank Holidays. The temporary phlebotomy service provided from Seven Kings Health Centre has now ceased.

In total, there are 23 sites offering phlebotomy services across BHR. All of these sites are listed on our website including our Redbridge PCN sites.

Current data:

25,559 blood tests were carried out across community and GP sites across BHR in November 2021.

  • 88% of appointments were carried out within 1 week from the date of booking.
  • 11% of appointments were carried out within 2 weeks from the date of booking.
  • 1% of appointments were carried out between 2 and 4 weeks from date of booking (patient choice).
  • We are pleased to report that we have seen a dramatic decrease in numbers of those not attending their appointments from around 15% last December to around 6% at present.

November patient survey results

11000 patients responded to the survey in November with 8682 of these respondents describing their overall experience of the service as “very good” and 1981 as “good”.

We will continue to learn from these responses in order to shape the service into one that best meets the needs of the local community.

Engagement

  • As above, we have developed a patient survey which can be completed online via a text and email link once the appointment has finished.
  • Work is being carried out to add GP sites to this survey and to ensure that the survey is fully compatible with those who are accessing via a mobile phone.
  • This link can also be shared via email for those who do not have a mobile phone.
  • We continue to share updates and the link to our dedicated email address in our local and NEL wide stakeholder updates to invite local feedback.
  • We are working closely with Healthwatch to reach out to those who do not have web/mobile phone access for their feedback to ensure that feedback is representative.
  • A frequently updated list of all sites and provision is available on the CCG website, as well as on the NELFT website and is linked to from the BHRUT website.
  • The above mentioned list of sites is also shared regularly with practice colleagues for patients.
  • We are working with local partners to look at how we can share the information for those who have limited/no digital access.
  • We are hoping to run our dedicated phlebotomy sessions that will accommodate people with learning disabilities from April 2022.
  • We are currently looking at suitable ways of engaging with with our LD networks to gather feedback on the proposed design of these sessions.
  • We are also looking at home visiting for those with severe learning disabilities.
