Newham

We are responsible for commissioning health and care services for the people of Newham, and making sure these services meet the needs of local people.

It’s our job to make sure that you receive high quality healthcare services whenever you need them – whether this is advice from a pharmacist or GP, a procedure in hospital, help at home through local community services, or if you need support with your mental health.

Newham borough map

With seven other local authority areas – Barking and Dagenham, City of London, Hackney, Havering, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest – we make up NHS North East London Clinical Commissioning Group (NEL CCG).

Newham is home to around 353,000 people. It has a long and rich history as the most diverse London borough.

The health status of people living in Newham is, in general, worse than the London average due to:

  • higher mortality rates from circulatory diseases and diabetes
  • lower than London average life expectancy
  • poor cancer survival rates
  • high incidence of respiratory illnesses
  • high incidence mental health problems.

Our borough suffers from poor air quality and fails to meet national air quality standards, which negatively affects health. This particularly impacts the old, the young and those with existing lung and heart conditions.

The borough also has one of the highest rates of physically inactive adults and one of the highest rates of obese children in London. Limiting long term illnesses are also prominent within the population.

While there has been some progress, there is still a long way to go to address health inequalities and improve local health outcomes and that’s why we are working with partners as part of an integrated care partnership to maximise the impact we can have on addressing health inequality.

Borough partnership

The Newham Health and Care Partnership is the place-based partnership for Newham, consisting of organisations focused on delivering improved health and wellbeing with and for the people of Newham.

The organisations that make up the partnership with the NEL CCG Newham team are:

Integrated Care System (ICS)

NHS North East London CCG is part of North East London Health and Care Partnership. This is our integrated care system (ICS), which brings together NHS organisations, local authorities, community organisations and local people to ensure our residents can live healthier, happier lives.

Integrated Care Partnership (ICP)

Within this ICS are three local Integrated Care Partnerships (ICPs). ICPs are local groups of health and care organisations, including local authorities, community organisations, working across smaller geographic boundaries. Each ICP is developing its own priorities, reflecting the different needs of each local population.

In Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest (TNW) our ICP brings together local partners to deliver multiple improvement and transformation programmes to support residents:

Our key priorities as an ICP are still in development.

We want to make sure that local people across Newham have access to the care and support they need. We actively seek opportunities to find out what our local communities in Newham think and feel about their local NHS and care services through a range of activities including surveys, focus groups and workshops, as well as through partner organisations and patient forums.
